So firstly and not surprisingly I'm listing Notepad++. This is an open source text editor which is simply amazing. It’s for the Windows (PC) platform. GIMP or the GNU Image Manipulation Program is an open source graphic design software for Windows, Unix and Mac (OS X). It’s a great alternative to Photoshop if you don't have that kind of coin available. It has a great list of features you can read about over at the GIMP website as well.
FileZilla is an amazing FTP program available on Windows, Linux and Mac (OS X). It is incredibly simply to configure and use and makes file transfer a breeze. It supports remote file editing, drag and drop and tabbed user interface to name a few.
Another excellent graphic manipulation program is Paint.net. It runs on Windows and has a wide variety of features. It consists of a very clean user interface, has plugin support, special effects and much more than I could possibly list here.
